I am a civic activist and The Left Alliance's municipal election candidate in Helsinki who actively advocates for a more humane drug policy and concrete actions to benefit the most vulnerable. I have worked with marginalized people throughout my entire life, and I know what I'm talking about.
I work daily with the most vulnerable people in our society. In my job, I encounter people on the streets and collaborate with societal actors to find solutions to issues such as homelessness and drug problems. Additionally, I am one of the initiators of a citizen initiative promoting supervised injection facilities.
Previously, I have worked in the fields of art and communication, addressing the these same themes. I have also lived abroad for several years and witnessed firsthand what a society without a social safety net is like. That's why I want to particularly advocate for marginalized groups and actively work towards a more equal and inclusive society for everyone.
In the coming municipal elections my goal is to make the voices of the most disadvantaged heard in municipal politics and to promote actions that improve their conditions. I also want to be making a policy at the municipal level that prevents government cuts from piling up on people who are already in a difficult situation.
Helsinki is a diverse city, but many vulnerable individuals face daily struggles. The homeless, people with substance abuse issues, and immigrants deserve to be heard, and their needs must be taken into account in decision-making.
To combat homelessness, Helsinki needs more affordable rental housing and effective solutions such as the "Housing First" model. Substance abuse problems must be tackled through prevention, harm reduction, and adequate treatment services. Immigrant integration should be strengthened by providing effective language and employment services while actively fighting discrimination.
Standing up for the vulnerable benefits the entire city—it enhances safety, reduces social costs, and fosters a more humane Helsinki for all.
As a growing metropolis, Helsinki must meet the diverse social and healthcare needs of its residents in a way that sets an example for all of Finland. Reasonable waiting times, low-threshold service points, and efficient care coordination are essential to ensure that no one is left without services.
Helsinki must allocate sufficient resources to provide comprehensive and accessible services that improve the quality of life and well-being of the entire city. This includes expanding low-threshold service points, ensuring timely access to care, implementing naloxone programs to prevent overdose deaths, and preparing for safe consumption rooms when legislation allows. Addressing these challenges effectively will not only enhance public health but also contribute to a safer and more livable city.
All children and young people should have equal opportunities to participate in hobbies, learn, and grow in a safe environment, regardless of their family's financial situation or background. While Helsinki has adopted Finland’s Hobby Model, accessibility and system complexity pose challenges for low-income families.
To ensure truly equal opportunities, the city must improve access to hobbies, integrate activities into school days, and provide targeted support for children and families from diverse backgrounds. Schools must also have clear anti-bullying measures and sufficient resources for student welfare, including school psychologists and counselors. Investments in youth support, equitable hobby access, and safe school environments are essential for a just and thriving Helsinki.
A just and equal Helsinki is built through action, not just words. The city's diversity requires inclusive democracy, real accessibility, and equal opportunities to ensure that everyone’s voice is heard and every resident feels part of the community.
Bringing decision-making closer to residents means expanding participatory budgeting, strengthening local forums, and ensuring multilingual communication. Accessibility must be considered not only in physical spaces but also in city services, digital access, and decision-making processes.
Helsinki has the opportunity to be a city where people don’t just live but feel a genuine sense of belonging and the ability to influence their surroundings.
